Checking in with the list

Well, not much more got crossed off the list since the show. I did add some more things (in green) though: But a lot of stuff has been simmering,

blog about it! Be that as it may, the show starts tomorrow, so how did I do in the prep for Art for Heaven’s Sake?

But a lot of stuff has been simmering, and I’ve got some big things coming up!

  • Fingers & toes crossed, the website may actually be happening soon, and I’m planning a doozy of a giveaway to get it started!
  • I’ve got another show mid-November, I’m on the operating board for this one, and it’s been a lot of work. Hopefully our work pays off and we have wonderful weather and LOTS of customers.
  • Hubby has a conference in San Diego just before Thanksgiving, so the 4 of us are gonna have a couple of days down there (R&R for me and the boys, work for Daddy).

I’m in need of new focusing, and lo & behold, it’s time for another goal check in – just what I needed!

Mid October Check in

I’ve been really working away, making a lot of stuff, and I’m so sad I don’t get to properly blog about it all…to me, something doesn’t feel DONE now unless I blog about it! Be that as it may, the show starts tomorrow, so how did I do in the prep for Art for Heaven’s Sake?

I got a lot made, bailed on a couple of things, and I’ll see what kind of portfolio I can cobble together tonight. Thanks goodness my Mom is here, she spent the whole day ironing scarves and tagging things!

I DID get some pix taken, not as many as I wanted, and I can’t process them all, but I can show you an overview of what I’ve been doing the past week:

1) Tried to make some complete outfits of the freshly picked rompers…

2) Made 3 messenger bags:

3) Made covers for all the Ecojotters I had on hand:

4) Made 18 6” x 8” wee quilts, the same construction method as my Branch & Birds. I’m calling this series “Botanical Sketches”.

Okay, I feel a teeny bit complete I’m off to work on that portfolio! Wish me luck – it’s going to be a LONG weekend!

Mid-month Goal Check In

Well, I’m looking at this list, and some of the things done seem SO LONG ago! Obviously, the 1st 2 weeks of school completely consumed me. And the actual sewing I did occurred way back Labor Day Weekend! I did a lot of computer work last weekend…I’m still on a steep learning curve with Illustrator, those banners took WAY more time than I thought they would. But, fingers crossed, they’re fine and something I don’t have to repeat. I did take some time yesterday to start and almost finish an art quilt entry for the Animals show at the RAA – it’s due today, so I’ve gotta rush home after I teach and get that finished up!

I also did a bunch more work on Artists for a Cause, this little show has grown this year, and it’s definitely a lot of work. Here’s hoping the work results in more sales for the artists, and lots of moola for this year’s chosen local charity, the Redlands Bowl Association. (All the artists donate 20% of their sales). I received the postcards I designed for this from Vista Print the other day, and they’re awesome! Very nice quality. I also designed a poster, which I’ll show you now so I don’t leave you without anything to see!

I’m Back!

Well – THAT was a long weekend! Thanks goodness my husband can mess around with the guts of a computer, and understands things like updating the bios of the motherboard (mine was like 8 versions behind!) For the cost of $100, plus a lot of hours, I’ve got a new, “green”, 1 Terabyte hard drive, and a squeaky clean install of vista and all my programs that I actually use. Although I was able to monitor email and keep a light finger on the Twitter stream, I’ve felt like my right arm was cut off!

Good news – I’ve now got a backlog of stuff to post about!

Bad news – no time to blog! 7 days and counting til school starts!

So, I’ve gotta start by taking a look at my to-do list. I’ve got a due date of Sept 7 on a bunch of things because that’s my last day of freedom!

The color code: green is added during the month, red is a MUST FINISH!

Well, I actually got lots done! WooHoo! The business aspect I’m most proud of is the new blog contacts – I got lots more blog mentions than I set out to, and I’ve got a 2 part series on photography written and being edited by the folks at Craft Nouveau.

I also spent a little time on another home dec project – new pillows & simple slipcovers for the family room. “Candy!” you yell… “What are you doing DECORATING when you have so much other stuff to do!” 😉 Well, as I discovered earlier in the summer, an area of my house that is dirty or REALLY cluttered weighs me down, and sometimes it’s better to stop and fix it – and really clears the way for me get going through the to-do list. A combination of a sale on fabric at J Caroline and having to reinstall lots of software left me with some nice home dec fabric and a need to do simple sewing (pillows) while loading stuff onto my computer – so I got to make my family room look a little cleaner & brighter (pix in the to be blogged queue!) And now have lots of energy to make a big push on the list!

Now I need to throttle back and focus on getting the dayjob under control and focus my business efforts on getting ready for the Fall show season!

August Mid-month Goal Checkup

Testing, testing, is this mike on? 😉 This week has been crazy busy with lots of online stuff. It’s amazing that at some point all the time spend blogging, commenting, twittering, etc… starts to pay off. I started this month hoping that i could send a couple of shout outs to a blog or two in hopes of a mention, and lo and behold, I got a bunch…plus a request that I re-write my photography info with more detail in a 2 part article for Craft Nouveau! WooHoo! Of course, this means I have to write it – somehow it’s harder to do that than the endless blather on this here blog!

I also spent some time in a downwardly spiralling funk, completely overwhelmed with all the the things I want to accomplish before I go back to school. I had scheduled a lunch date with an old friend who was in S. CA in Temecula, about a 90 minute drive from here on Friday, and I almost cancelled it. But, I didn’t, had a great time and felt much better on Saturday. So I was reminded that I’m not Super Woman, I need to take a break once in awhile! So…I grabbed my hubby and we ran out for a quick sushi dinner & actually went to see the theater and saw Julia & Julie. It was great, Meryl Streep was fantastic, the movie struck a bunch of chords with me (don’t letting blogging & the internet consume your life was a biggie. Another was to try to live life with gusto!) And then, I was able to go back upstairs at 10 PM and photograph 12 scarves – this was the 1st time I tried to photograph my light (5mm) habotai scarves, and I think my new setup is working fabulously. Can you tell that this scarf:

Habotai-Tiger-Lily-01 Habotai-Tiger-Lily-04 Habotai-Tiger-Lily-07

has a different weight and texture than these?

Anyway, here’s my list for August, some done, more added in green:

Balancing it all

First of all, thanks for all  the AMAZINGLY positive comments on my photography efforts of the other day. I’m pretty sure I answered each one individually, but please know that I am so happy that the pictures look great to you all, and that the palette idea works the way I want it to! I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating that by the time I’m done with a photo, I no longer know if it looks good, and external validation is needed! So, thank you! I feel validated! 😉

And then…look what I woke up to yesterday!

Design-Hole-Mention

Yup, my houses were featured on Design Hole! How exciting! Not only is it fun and head swelling to have some other blogger feature you, it also is marketing, something which is…work! I’ve explained to my husband how I actually HAVE to spend time reading & commenting on blogs…it’s market research and development – I’m clever, aren’t I 😉 What started as fun entertainment has now turned into part of my career as an artist! Any old who, this Design Hole mention kicked me in the pants with a reminder of my main point of this little business is to be able to financially support my artistic endeavors, and to continue to grow as an artist. So although half of me wants to dye and photograph the other 10 palettes I’m working with right now…I really NEED to make some more of these houses this summer, and let the business of Candied Fabrics take a little back seat action!

Well, even with the list shortened because of that darn vacation I didn’t get a bunch of my goals complete. BUT, I did do a lot of other business stuff – so to make myself better I added those new things to the list in green, just so I could cross them off!

I did get an idea for a new baby item I wouldn’t mind making some to sell after quick dyeing a replacement blankie for a lost one. I’ve also been meaning to try to find affordable organic or recycled sources for my PFD fabric, after being so excited making journal covers for 100% recycled paper journals. I even sent off a “look at me” note to a popular blog, and (fingers crossed) I’ll get a mention on their blog next week. So, I think overall I DID get some business stuff done this month! WooHoo!

Okay, so my last month of freedom, (wail – summer vacation – it’s halfway OVER!) I truly want to get a lot of stuff done, so this Fall I can concentrate on the making aspect of my little business in dribs and drabs, and not worry about big items like finding new sources of fabric, etc… Thus, the list for August:
